Imagine yourself floating in the Indonesian archipelago, the water is warm, clear and a deep blue colour.  The marine life is like nothing you have seen before. You are holding onto the flotation ring and practicing your breath technique, slowing your mind and relaxing your body before you take your final breath.   You dive under, pulling yourself along the line, feeling the sensation of the water on your skin, the deeper you go, the cooler it gets.  Your attention is on your heartbeat and the crackling sounds of the ocean.  The pressure builds up in your ears with each pull on the line, as you descend deeper into your journey.  It feels so natural, yet so unnatural at the same time.   This is where the experience really starts, this is when you begin to really exercise mind control.  You clear your mind of any thoughts and bring it back to a state of relaxation.  You become aware of your buddy diver beside you, its all okay, they are watching your every move to make sure you are safe.

 

Learning to Freedive is all about learning to be comfortable being outside of your comfort zone.  It’s an opportunity to be safely challenged in a new and unique way.  Initially, it will feel so foreign being meters underwater without the ability to breathe.  Yet through understanding the physiology behind the dive reflex, knowing and trusting that your body has this under control, you are able to discover what you are truly capable of.

 

One of the most incredible and beautiful effects of learning to freedive is the profound state of calm you will experience.  So how does submerging yourself in water induce such a deep state of relaxation?  Firstly, the simple act of immersing your face in water, allows your heart rate drops by up to 25%.  Then as your blood starts rushing into your core to protect your most important organs, your brainwaves start to soften. The deeper you go the more profound the effect is.  Yet, even at shallow depths, freediving can bring you in touch with such a pure state of bliss.

 

At our Freediving and Yoga Retreat, you will learn how to achieve freedom from your busy mind.   Professional training in the freediving breath techniques, will not only teach you how to breathe properly but will bring you into a greater connection with yourself and your body.  In our daily lives we only use 20-30% of our lung capacity. Freediving increases this capacity whilst also slowing your breath.  This deep, calm breath slows your mind, allowing you the space to feel and see things clearly. There is a surrender that takes place and you experience complete presence.

 

Freediving is the perfect tool to practice mindfulness.  You need to be 100% present and in a state of peace, trusting and letting go whilst not being attached to the outcome.  The key to successful freediving is relaxation, the more relaxed you are, the less oxygen you use.

 

Free diving is the ultimate form of connecting with your Self.  It’s a journey of self- discovery.  It is the ultimate discipline, being able to listen to your body so innately gives you a deep understanding of the direct impact your emotions have on your mind.  Learning to freedive teaches you self-awareness to know how far you can push yourself, within your limits in any given moment. It is a truly incredible experience.

AIDA CERTIFICATION

 

Learn Freediving with the most passionate instructors in Indonesia.  They will support you through the Freediving process, explaining all the principles to you whilst motivating you to feel comfortable and safe in the water and to reach the requirements of AIDA certification.   The student to instructor will be a 4:1 – The course will be taught with theory and open water sessions.

Yoga

 

We will start each day with some pranayama and asanas to warm the body and to stretch the lungs before our first dive.  Yoga and meditation help you to know your mind and control your thoughts.

Our morning sessions will focus on breath work and mind control, to ensure we have successful dives and positive experiences in the water.

We will finish each day with an afternoon practice to stretch out our bodies after the days activities.  Each class will be a gentle flow focusing on some counter poses to release your body and to ease further into a deep state of relaxation.

 

Accommodation

 

A traditional, Indoensian Phinisi 30 meter Boat that combines the luxury of a traditional sailing boat with the comfort of a modern yacht.  There are two spacious outdoor decks where you can relax in the sun and can watch the spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Hosting up to 10 guests in 5 cabins that are all fully air conditioned all with ensuite bathroom.

Freediving - Frequently Asked Questions

+ I have never dived before is this okay?

Yes! With a little training, you can learn to hold your breath and feel comfortable underwater, going through each stage with your dive instructor by your side.

+ Will this help my scuba diving?

By learning freediving respiration techniques, it will help a scuba diver to reduce your consumption rate.

+ Is Freediving dangerous?

With proper training, using the buddy system and understanding and knowing your limits, you will be safe.

+ Will I get a qualification?

If you are able to demonstrate that you have satisfactorily achieved a sound understanding of the Freediving and all safety principles, you will receive the appropriate AIDA qualification.

+ Where do I fly into?

+ When should I arrive?

We set sail mid morning, so we recommend to arrive the day before and stay in a local hotel near the harbour, Labuan Bajo.

+ When should I book my departure?

We will get back into the harbour by around midday, so booking an afternoon flight  or local accommodation

+ What should I pack?

Comfortable beach/resort wear, sportswear, sneakers for hiking, a light sweater or jacket for evening times.

+ What else do I need to organise?

You will need to book your flights, comprehensive travel insurance (we won’t accept your booking without it) and any other medication you require.   Please make sure you have enough cash on you to cover any additional expenses, as all payments are to be made in cash.  You may wish to purchase additional drinks on the boat as well as allowing some payment for gratuities for the boat crew.  The marine park fees are not included in the fee (250,000 IDR).

+ What training will help to prepare me for Freediving?

Any training in Aerobic heart range will give you advantages in both depth potential and the duration of your comfort zone. Deep breathing exercises and practicing holding your breath with a purposely lowered heart rate can also help.
